EXTENSION

OUR NEW EXTENSION

When we moved to  Bromley we loved our new house but, with a new baby, decided we needed more space. I designed a new dining room that would have lots of light and give nice views out over the garden. I put in sliding doors and the floor at the same level of the decking, so that it would open out on to the garden.

Claire wanted somewhere to put her thousands of books, so I designed floor to ceiling and wall to wall shelves that were double depth, so that they would all fit in, with room to spare. She spent two days putting them all on the shelves and after arranging them according to author, genre, size etc etc she decided that colour coding looked best. We can never find a book, but it looks very pleasing.

I also designed a new bathroom. The tiling is a bit like graph paper, so it feels like having a bath in some maths home-work. The black wall is done with magnetic wall paint, so that we can hang up all the post-cards we send to each other.

STUDIO

GARAGE AT THE BOTTOM OF OUR GARDEN

Our new house had a garage at the bottom of the garden, which we decided to turn in to a studio, where I could do my architecture work and play my guitars without bothering everyone else and where Claire could do her sewing.

We ripped off the garage door, cladded it out in OSB Board with lots of insulation and put in a large glass window. The outside of the garage has been painted with black-board paint, so that it can be decorated to look like whatever we want. Last summer, it was the sheriff's office and jail at our son's cowboy birthday party.

The storage shelves were found on a pavement being thrown out when a shop nearby decided to have a refurbishment. It was covered in sticky labels and was a bit of a labour of love to clean up, but it looks lovely now.

For the last few months the garage has mostly been used to get ready for our son's 'Knights and Damsels' party

We made the bunting to go in the 'medieval hall' that we hired for his birthday party

YOU DECIDE

THE PAINT FACTOR

It was put to the good folk of Bromley Common to decide what colour our house should be painted.

After a large degree of general public participation, the winner by a vast majority was Frosted Lake (darker blue) by Weather shield.

Other suggestions that arose from the public vote, were for TITS
which was written of the green colour, due to being unable to track down this colour, the suggestion was dismissed.

Job well done, would like to thank all the people who cast a vote, democracy in action. If you have a project or a dilemma which needs a sign board for the general public input to help you out.
